International A26 and MaxxForce Fault Codes
Lookup Guide
For an International A26 or MaxxForce fault, record the complete code, the reporting module, engine serial number and model year before choosing a diagnostic procedure. A dashboard number alone is not enough to identify the repair. Use service information for the actual engine and emissions configuration.
Is the International A26 a Detroit DD13 engine?
No. International describes the A26 as built from the MAN D26 engine crankcase. The A26 should not be diagnosed using a Detroit DD13 fault-code table simply because both are heavy-duty diesel engines. See International’s A26 launch information for the manufacturer’s description of its architecture.
What information should you collect?
- Truck VIN, engine family, engine serial number and model year.
- The complete displayed code, including SPN and FMI when provided, plus the module that reported it.
- Whether the fault is active or previously active, its occurrence count and the conditions when it appeared.
- Any related codes, warning lamps, recent repairs and the customer’s symptoms.
- A saved diagnostic report before clearing anything.
Keep the engine identification separate from the badge on the truck. International trucks have used different engine families. A26, MaxxForce and a Cummins-powered International require different coverage checks. A tool that connects to one engine is not automatically suitable for every engine or controller installed in that make of truck.
How to find the correct troubleshooting procedure
- Identify the engine from its data plate and confirm that identity in the diagnostic software.
- Read the complete fault description and identify the controller reporting it.
- Open the manufacturer’s current service information for that engine, model year and controller.
- Follow the applicable diagnostic sequence, recording test results. A fault description identifies what the controller detected; it does not by itself prove that a named sensor or component needs replacement.
- After the repair, follow the specified verification procedure and save the final report.
Do not substitute a generic internet code table for the engine-specific test procedure. The same symptom can involve wiring, supply voltage, communications, a mechanical condition or a component fault. The required measurements and operating conditions belong to the relevant service procedure.
Which diagnostic setup should you buy?
Start with the truck and the job: code reading, live data, a particular component test, service routines or programming. Send us the VIN, engine model and year, the complete fault, and the function you need. We can then check the current software coverage, adapter, cables and licensing against that application.
A complete laptop kit can simplify setup. If you already own a laptop or adapter, provide its model and installed software version so we can check the existing equipment before recommending a replacement.
Common questions
Can I clear the fault and send the truck out?
Clearing a fault is not proof of a repair. Record it first, identify its cause and complete the manufacturer’s verification steps.
Does one International code list cover every MaxxForce and A26?
No. Match the service information to the engine family, year, controller and complete fault information.
What should I send HDT?
The VIN, engine identification, complete code or diagnostic report, and the work you need the tool to perform.
Call 866-217-0063 or contact HDT for a diagnostic-tool coverage check.
Need a tool that fits your bay?
Call a diagnostic-tool specialist before buying the wrong scanner.
