Heavy Duty ABS Diagnostic Tools
Bendix, WABCO, Haldex | HDT
Heavy-duty ABS isn’t optional anymore. Class 6-8 tractors require electronic stability control, trailer ABS is a federal mandate, and the consequence of an unserviced ABS fault is a roadside out-of-service ticket — or worse. Three diagnostic platforms cover the bulk of what’s on US trucks: Bendix ACom AE for Bendix systems, WABCO Toolbox Plus for WABCO/ZF systems, and Haldex software for trailer ABS. This page lays out which to buy, what each covers, and the realistic stack for an independent HD shop.
The HD ABS landscape
North American Class 6-8 trucks run two main brake/ABS architectures:
- Bendix — dominant on Freightliner, Western Star, Kenworth, Peterbilt, International. Bendix EC-60, EC-80, and current ECUs handle ABS, ESC (Electronic Stability Control), automatic traction control, and Bendix’s Wingman driver-assist suite.
- WABCO (now ZF Commercial Vehicle Solutions) — dominant on Volvo, Mack, and a portion of European-influenced HD trucks. Trailer ABS heavily WABCO. ZF acquired WABCO in 2020; the diagnostic software is still Toolbox Plus.
Trailer ABS is its own world: Bendix, WABCO, and Haldex all have trailer-specific ABS modules with their own diagnostic protocols. A tractor-only ABS tool won’t service a trailer; you need trailer-specific cables and (often) trailer-specific software.
Bendix ACom AE — the tractor-side ABS standard
Bendix ACom AE replaced ACom Pro in late 2024. Built by Cojali (the Jaltest people) on the Jaltest platform with Bendix-licensed access to Bendix-specific functions. Runs on Windows 10/11. Covers the EC-60 (older), EC-80, and current Bendix ABS ECUs, plus Bendix Wingman ADAS family.
What ACom AE does: Read codes, clear codes, live data on wheel speed sensors, stroke sensors, and ESC components. Bidirectional valve testing. Wheel speed sensor calibration. ESC sensor zero-point set after axle work. Wingman ADAS module setup and calibration.
Key adapters: ACom AE pairs with NEXIQ USB-Link 3 or compatible RP1210 adapter. Bendix-specific trailer harnesses are needed for trailer ABS work.

WABCO Toolbox Plus — Volvo, Mack, and trailer ABS
WABCO Toolbox Plus is the long-running WABCO/ZF diagnostic platform. Strong on Volvo and Mack tractor ABS, plus a deep coverage of WABCO trailer ABS modules. Available as a 12-month digital download license or perpetual depending on the version.
What Toolbox Plus does: Read/clear codes on WABCO tractor ABS, ECAS air suspension, OnGuard collision mitigation. Trailer ABS diagnosis. Sensor calibrations. Bidirectional valve and component testing.
Key adapters: Standard RP1210 (NEXIQ USB-Link 3 works). For trailer ABS, you need a trailer-side ABS harness — typically the SAE J560 7-pin lighting connector adapted to a trailer ABS diagnostic plug.
Haldex — trailer ABS coverage
Haldex is the third major trailer ABS brand in North America (alongside Bendix trailer and WABCO trailer). Haldex modular trailer ABS systems show up on a significant portion of refrigerated, dry van, and tank trailers. Diagnostic access via Haldex-specific software or via Jaltest with the appropriate cable adapter.
Most independent shops use Jaltest CV with the Haldex cable kit (JDC108A — Haldex EB+/TRS, TPMS) for trailer ABS work rather than maintaining a standalone Haldex license. Jaltest covers the core Haldex diagnostic functions for shops that don’t specialize in trailer-only work.
The realistic ABS diagnostic stack
Most independent HD shops don’t need all three platforms. The realistic stack depends on what comes through:
Tractor-heavy shop (Class 6-8 power units)
Bendix ACom AE if Freightliner/Kenworth/Peterbilt/International dominate. WABCO Toolbox Plus if Volvo/Mack are dominant. If both, get both — they’re not interchangeable.
Trailer shop or tractor-trailer combination
Add Jaltest CV with the trailer ABS cable kit (covers Bendix, WABCO, and Haldex trailer ABS through one platform). Most cost-effective trailer ABS coverage if you also need general HD diagnostic capability.
Reefer / refrigerated trailer specialist
Jaltest CV with Haldex and WABCO cable kits, plus Carrier and Thermo King software for the reefer units (separate from ABS). A specialty stack — call us for the right configuration.
Fleet maintenance with mixed brands
The full ABS stack: Bendix ACom AE + WABCO Toolbox Plus + Jaltest CV (covers Haldex trailer + general HD). Total ~$5,000-$7,000 in software plus the adapter and cable side.
What an aftermarket multi-brand platform covers vs ABS-specific
JPRO Professional, Jaltest CV, and TEXA IDC6 Truck all read and clear ABS codes on most Bendix, WABCO, and Haldex systems. They handle bidirectional valve tests on most modules. What they typically don’t do: deep ESC component calibration, Bendix Wingman ADAS setup, or programming new ABS ECUs after replacement. For routine ABS fault diagnosis, the aftermarket platforms are sufficient. For ESC calibration and ADAS setup, you need the brand-specific platform (Bendix ACom AE or WABCO Toolbox Plus).
Common HD ABS fault patterns
| Symptom | Most common cause | Diagnostic platform |
|---|---|---|
| ABS warning lamp on, code points to wheel speed sensor | Failed wheel speed sensor or contaminated tone ring | Aftermarket platform sufficient |
| ESC fault on tractor, intermittent | ESC sensor zero-point off after axle/suspension work | Bendix ACom AE or WABCO Toolbox Plus required for calibration |
| Trailer ABS warning at hookup | Bad J560 connection, broken trailer cable, dead trailer module | Aftermarket platform with trailer cable |
| Air pressure low fault despite full system pressure | Failed pressure sensor, harness chafe | Aftermarket platform sufficient |
| New ABS ECU installed, won’t communicate | Module needs configuration / coding to truck | Brand-specific platform required (ACom AE or Toolbox Plus) |
| Bendix Wingman radar misalignment fault | Radar sensor needs alignment after windshield work | Bendix ACom AE required for Wingman setup |
